My eyes aren't what they use to be.”

I enjoyed DI Riley. He is that classic tortured detective that makes police procedurals work. You will kind of have the first book spoiled if you jump in here, but I didn’t mind that. I thought the mystery itself had lots of twists and turns, and had a pretty fast-pace.

Laurie, the incredibly "intelligent" woman who's been allowing her friend to drug her and lie to the police about the events leading up to her husband's murder takes an age to figure out that her friend might possibly not be a completely honest and innocent person. She also takes until almost the end of the book to realise that the perfume she smelled whilst being carried up to the murder scene is the same perfume that Monica, who she's been best friends with for 20+ years wears all the time (she must wear it all the time because we're told that she receives a new bottle of it every birthday and Christmas from Robert). Police neglect to interview a close neighbour of a murder victim because they've heard through the grapevine that the neighbour in question is blind, and so couldn't possibly have any useful information to give them about the night it happened.Internally the home presents well with a neutral decor and under-floor heating throughout (excluding sunroom). An entrance hallway has a useful cloaks-cupboard and, door leading into the principal bedroom which has a large bay window facing towards the front aspect of the home. There is also access via a door into the living room which also has front aspect views and wet room. This area of the home has been fitted with an open, walk-in area with rain-shower and separate attachment, an affixed clear screen, low level w/c and a vanity unit with top mounted wash hand basin which are finished in white. Furthermore, there is a heated towel rail, both the walls and flooring are covered with a modern ceramic tile and an obscure glazed window faces the side aspect. Laurie wakes with a start, her head spinning. She’s laying on a bed but not sure where. When she attempts to rise her fingers touch something metal. She pulls herself up and realizes she is wet, and her hands feel slippery. It’s dark, and the light switch doesn’t work. She makes it downstairs to the electric panel and flips the switch. The light floods the room. She looks down and realizes she is covered in blood.
