About this deal

Thank you to Net Galley and Wednesday books for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. My opinions are my own and are provided willingly and honestly.*

It's still a little awkward, and now that I'm older it's harder to take Enola's quips and "wink at the reader" sort of attitude. The mystery also seemed a little shaky. Why did the villain end up doing what he did? Because that's just "how he is!" Okay, sure, but please give him a direct motive that holds water other than just inherent, senseless villainy. My twin. Flossie.” The word verged upon becoming a sob until Miss Glover paused, visibly struggling to master herself. Her voice barely trembled as she went on. “I share with her a disregard for such class distinctions, and from the day of our birth, our parents saw to it that we had every advantage of education and culture. Flossie—her name is Felicity, but we call her Flossie—she took to the arts like a lark to the sky, dancing like a butterfly and singing like a nightingale. I, however, found myself more at home with mathematics. A slide rule is my best friend.” Miss Glover managed a wincing smile. “I have remained a spinster, and make my living as a typist and bookkeeper. But Felicity was born for marital bliss, or so it seemed. When our parents departed this earthly sphere, they did so happy in the knowledge that their daughter was the wife of the Earl of Dunhench, no less.

Although there is a much humor in this novel there are disturbing descriptions of the conditions in insane asylums of the period – nothing we haven’t read before or seen in numerous other period pieces, but disturbing never-the-less. And what an adventure it turns out to be! Enola is inventive and creative when it comes to costumes, disguises, and aliases. She can concoct a story to wiggle her way into a situation and out of it again, if need be. Does trouble find her? It most certainly does! Does she get the job done? Wait and see! Enola Holmes represents such an integral role for women's progression, especially within the time this novel was set, where women could not rent a room without a chaperone or male relative present. I venerate her free spirit and most of all her unwavering tenacity. Enola is not bound by society’s restraints but a free spirit, a wanderer, a nomad, being able to fit into everywhere but not truly belonging. Enola Holmes regresa en su primera aventura tras el éxito de la película de NETFLIX. De vuelta a los primeros puestos de las listas de ventas.Indignant, I wanted to sit up and say I was not so easily killed and I never fainted, but to my surprise my body would not obey me. I merely stirred and murmured. Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense.
