About this deal

Newcastle United shirt sponsor Sela lit up the sky above St James' Park with a spectacular football-themed drone show to celebrate the return of top-level European football to Tyneside. The Magpies face French champions Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday night and Sela marked the occasions as part of the electric build-up to the game. One of The Magpie Group’s proposals for the redevelopment in the early 1990s. The plans bare some resemblance to the redevelopment that actually took place just a few years later. c) Leazes Terrace - from its western junction with Terrace Place, northwards then eastwards, for 205 metres, the tenth-largest football stadium in the United Kingdom overall when including the Millennium Stadium (the national stadium of Wales), and Celtic Park (a Scottish club football ground); Sunday Mirror Barcelona, Man Utd, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Keegan's..., 13 October 2006

In 1892, West End folded due to financial difficulties caused by a failed attempt to emulate their East End rivals’ share issue. Of the two rivals, East End were regarded as having the better team and finances, whilst with the location of St James’ Park on the western edge of the city centre, it was generally felt that West End’s ground was a more convenient location. Following discussion between the directors of the two clubs, East End agreed to take over the lease from the now defunct West End, and played their first home match at St James’ on 3rd September 1892 before adopting their new name of Newcastle United following a public meeting that December. On 30 and 31 May 2015, [63] the stadium held the Super League Magic Weekend. St James' Park was chosen to host the event after the City of Manchester Stadium, which had hosted the event annually since 2012, became unavailable. The fans, the club and the players deserve these special moments and I hope we’ve added to what will be an unforgettable occasion for everyone who loves Newcastle United and this city."Following the takeover of Newcastle United, the new ownership would remove the Sports Direct sponsorship all over the stadium with co owner Amanda Staveley claiming she was "looking forward" to removing the Sports Direct branding to get new sponsors with the signs being removed on 6 December. [41] [42] With the removal of the sponsor in the stadium former owner Mike Ashley would take legal action against Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi after Ashley alleged that both Staveley and Ghodoussi breached their agreement to continue to sponsor the stadium until the end of the 2021–22 season. [43] [44] Stadium description [ edit ] Name [ edit ] Official names [ edit ] The sign outside St. James' Park main entrance In 1886 the lease of St James’ Park was acquired by Newcastle West End, who along with cross-town rivals Newcastle East End were one of the founder clubs of the Northern League in 1889. At the time of its founding, the Northern League was only the second league in existence after the creation of the Football League a year earlier. It was of a high standard and consisted of professional clubs. West End’s involvement in the Northern League saw regular and more high-profile fixtures take place at St James’. As a result, the club constructed a small stand and a press box, to the annoyance of the affluent residents of Leazes Terrace who began to oppose Football being played at St James’ and unsuccessfully lobbied the council to ban it. On 10 November 2011, Newcastle United announced that the stadium would officially be renamed Sports Direct Arena, as a temporary measure to "showcase the sponsorship opportunity to interested parties", whilst looking for a sponsor for possible future stadium re-branding. According to the club, the St James' Park title was dropped as not being "commercially attractive". [36]

Having appointed Kevin Keegan as manager in February 1992, the club rallied and victories over Portsmouth and Leicester in the final two games of the 1991/92 season securing NUFC’s second tier status, Hall was not only able to clear NUFC’s debts but also inject much needed cash both on and off the pitch. As the club recruited players that would help propel them to promotion to the Premier League as champions in 1992/93, work was also taking place to ensure the SJP would be one of the best stadiums once they returned. The final months of the season saw the new Leazes Stand begin to take shape. The vast empty space left as a result of the failed 1978 redevelopment meant that the terracing could continue to be used in full. The beginnings of the stand allowed for it to be used as a makeshift stage for the local band Lindisfarne to perform at the promotion party which took place in the final game of the season in which Newcastle battered Leicester 7-1. a b "St James' or St James's?". BBC Tyne. 4 June 2008 [30 May 2008] . Retrieved 11 February 2008. What's in a name? Should Newcastle United's stadium be St James' Park or St. James's Park?...The sign on the wall of the stadium reads St James' Park [this statement contradicts an image used in the article, in which a full stop is included after the St], but is that right?...The question about whether the Toon's stadium should be written as St James' or St James's is certainly a talking point...[Dr Alan Firth, senior lecturer in applied linguistics at Newcastle University]:..."We would say that the apostrophe needs to be there because it's the park of St James. But there's variability, It's optional whether you have s apostrophe or s apostrophe s. You can choose either and both are correct." In May 2008 BBC Look North examined the case for adding an extra 's', to denote the ground is "the park of St James". [45] The club stated that the ground is named after its neighbouring street, St James Street, which predates the ground, [45] although it was pointed out the road sign of that street, and that of the adjacent St James Terrace, did not feature apostrophes. [45] The BBC stated that both local newspapers The Evening Chronicle and The Journal write the name with a second 's', reinstating it partially in response to reader complaints after a period of publishing stories without it.
